Popular Channel Nine presenter Erin Molan has spoken for the first time after her father's devastating cancer diagnosis.

Molan's father, Liberal Senator Jim Molan, announced last week he would take leave after he was diagnosed with an 'aggressive' form of cancer.

In a statement, Jim Molan said: "I will be taking leave from the Senate for further testing to confirm the prognosis, and commence treatment."

The news has rocked the Molan family and Erin has spoken out for the first time since her father's diagnosis.

In a social media statement, Erin and her mother, Anne, sisters Sarah and Felicity and brother Mick wanted to thank those that sent the "thousands of messages" thinking of Jim.

“We wish to express heartfelt thanks for the thousands of messages conveying good wishes, thoughts and prayers we have received in the past few days,” the post read.

“Along with Jim, we have been particularly heartened and inspired by those who have shared their own person cancer experiences with us.

“We thank every single person who has reach out. We are overwhelmingly grateful for your kindness.”

Molan's powerful message after procedure

Taking to social media last month, the popular NRL presenter posted a photo of herself lying in a hospital bed, calling on Australians to see their GP if something "doesn't feel right".

"Today I had a colonoscopy. My first one," she said.

"My sister was diagnosed with stage 3/4 bowel cancer at 27 - over a decade ago.

"I’ve had the genetic testing but not this. I’d honestly been scared. I kept coming up with excuses to put it off.

"My sister went in for this procedure and woke up to life changing news... I sat on the edge of her hospital bed as her doctor said the words that no person/family ever wants to hear - so the thought of something similar happening terrified me."

Molan opened up about her sister Sarah Sutton's bowel cancer diagnosis in 2019.
