NRL forward's massive ban after sickening send off

Bulldogs forward Jack Hetherington has accepted a huge five-week ban for his sickening tackle on the weekend against the Cowboys.

On Tuesday the Canterbury enforcer pleaded guilty to a grade-three careless high tackle charge, the highest level available without referring a player straight to the judiciary.

Hetherington was the first player in 2021 to be sent off after his head-high tackle on Valentine Holmes.

The resulting suspension becomes his sixth ban in a 29-game NRL career.

He has already missed 10 matches through bans alone.

By the time Hetherington is eligible to return - in round 12 against his former club Penrith - the 24-year-old will have bans tallying more than half of the number of NRL games he has played.

With his past record including two previous careless high tackle charges, his demerit points for the hit were increased by 120 per cent.

Gould tells Hetherington to change tackling technique

Sharks great Paul Gallen and NRL veteran coach Phil Gould both agreed with each other the tackle wasn't a send-off offence.

But Gallen had some words for Hetherington and how he needed to correct his tackling technique.

"Jack's got to improve his tackle technique. He is an elite talent. He is really special," Gould said on Channel Nine's 100% Footy.

When asked about who is teaching Hetherington to adjust his tackling technique, Gould said people have tried but, "He keeps getting in his own way."
