Stanford got some Pac-12 redemption on Sunday. The third-ranked team in the country held off No. 8 Oregon State, 61-58, to get back in the win column after a smackdown at the hands of Sabrina Ionescu and Oregon on Thursday.

It’s packed atop the Pac-12 standings and coming into Sunday’s schedule there were four teams with only one loss. Two of those faced off in Corvallis and it was the Cardinal that gained more headway despite falling behind by double digits in the first half.

Stanford (16-2, 5-1) and Oregon State (16-2, 4-2) traded leads through the second half and went into the final five chippy minutes tied at 52. Three players swapped 3-pointers over a 40-second stretch — Stanford’s Lacie Hull, Oregon State’s Destiny Slocum, and Stanford’s Kiana Williams — until settling into another of the game’s scoreless stretches while the Cardinal held a 58-55 lead. There was no score for 3:33 of play until Williams scored both free throws with 13 seconds on the clock.

The Beavers’ Kat Tudor was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining and made all three to cut the deficit to two. Williams hit another free throw to push it back to three and close out a much-needed bounce-back victory.

Williams, Hull, Prechtel lead Cardinal

Williams led the Stanford attack with 17 points, five assists and two steals. She hit 2 of 3 3-pointers at clutch spots to put the Cardinal back in after they fell behind early. Hull added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds with three assists and a block.

Freshman Ashten Prechtel had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds coming off the bench. She added three blocks, a game high.

Of concern for Stanford is freshman Haley Jones, who went down late in the third quarter after scoring eight points on 4 of 8 shooting. She was helped off the court by two trainers with an apparent knee injury and was on crutches after the game.

Slocum most of Beavers offense

Slocum controlled the game for Oregon State, scoring 26 points. She did her most damage in the first half with 21 of the team’s 36 points.

She was 11 of 21, including 3 of 7 from the 3-point line, with two rebounds and three assists.

Freshman forward Kennedy Brown had a team-high 12 rebounds. Mikayla Pivec was kept at bay, scoring 10 points on 4 of 12 shooting. She had five rebounds, one assist and a steal. Aleah Goodman chipped in four steals.

The Beavers will only have a short time to regroup. They play a home-and-away against No. 6 Oregon in the Civil War that starts Friday.

Slow Cardinal start turns into tight final quarters

It was a rocky start for the Cardinal. The Beavers scored the game’s first seven points and led 13-2 before the Cardinal found their footing to trail, 21-16, through one quarter.

The Beavers led by as many as 10 in the first part of the second quarter and clutched a four-point lead after Williams’ 3-pointer with 5:47 left.

Both sides went quiet offensively for nearly four minutes until Prechtel hit her own 3 to cut the lead on an assist from Lexie Hull and Stanford took its first lead on a Hull jumper at the 2:12 mark.

Slocum answered with an immediate jumper for the Beavers, followed by a Williams layup to take the lead back. Slocum’s 3-pointer gave Oregon State a 36-34 lead at the break.
