The Niu Technologies (NASDAQ:NIU) Analysts Have Been Trimming Their Sales Forecasts

The analysts covering Niu Technologies ( NASDAQ:NIU ) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for next year. Revenue estimates were cut sharply as analysts signalled a weaker outlook - perhaps a sign that investors should temper their expectations as well.

Following the downgrade, the current consensus from Niu Technologies' seven analysts is for revenues of CN¥5.2b in 2023 which - if met - would reflect a substantial 48% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are presumed to bounce 670% to CN¥3.53. Before this latest update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of CN¥6.0b and earnings per share (EPS) of CN¥3.73 in 2023. It looks like analyst sentiment has fallen somewhat in this update, with a measurable cut to revenue estimates and a small dip in earnings per share numbers as well.

The consensus price target fell 30% to CN¥60.73, with the weaker earnings outlook clearly leading analyst valuation estimates. The consensus price target is just an average of individual analyst targets, so - it could be handy to see how wide the range of underlying estimates is. The most optimistic Niu Technologies analyst has a price target of CN¥93.57 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at CN¥32.13. With such a narrow range of valuations, analysts apparently share similar views on what they think the business is worth.

These estimates are interesting, but it can be useful to paint some more broad strokes when seeing how forecasts compare, both to the Niu Technologies' past performance and to peers in the same industry. The analysts are definitely expecting Niu Technologies' growth to accelerate, with the forecast 37% annualised growth to the end of 2023 ranking favourably alongside historical growth of 29% per annum over the past five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to grow their revenue at 22% per year. It seems obvious that, while the growth outlook is brighter than the recent past, the analysts also expect Niu Technologies to grow faster than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts cut their earnings per share estimates, expecting a clear decline in business conditions. While analysts did downgrade their revenue estimates, these forecasts still imply revenues will perform better than the wider market. Furthermore, there was a cut to the price target, suggesting that the latest news has led to more pessimism about the intrinsic value of the business. Given the stark change in sentiment, we'd understand if investors became more cautious on Niu Technologies after today.

Even so, the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for the value creation of shareholders. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Niu Technologies going out to 2024, and you can see them free on our platform here.
