Nigerian real estate scam prevented by new rules

A Perth real estate agent has prevented Nigerian fraudsters from trying to sell a home they did not own.

Consumer Protection in WA says an overseas criminal network contacted a real estate agency in North Beach about selling a home in Edgewater.

Checks revealed the real owner of the home was living in South Africa.

In the past two years, scammers have convinced real estate agents to sell a home in Karrinyup and a property in Ballajura and send the proceeds overseas without the owners' consent.

Police say new guidelines, introduced in the wake of those scams to ensure real estate agents correctly identify the owner of a property, appear to be working.
