Saints will reportedly turn to Taysom Hill — not Jameis Winston — as QB vs. Falcons

The New Orleans Saints will turn to Taysom Hill as their quarterback in Week 11 while veteran Drew Brees is out due to injury, per ESPN’s Diana Russini and Adam Schefter.

Hill reportedly took all the starter reps at practice this week instead of Jameis Winston, who stepped in for Brees last week.

The Saints (7-2) host the Atlanta Falcons (3-6) in Week 11. All signs pointed to Winston taking on the starting role for that game while Brees deals with fractured ribs and a collapsed lung.

In his availability with reporters later Friday, head coach Sean Payton remained amusingly uncommitted on which quarterback will get the ball.

It would be Hill’s first start at quarterback. He has performed a variety of roles for the Saints since joining the franchise in 2017. He signed a two-year, $21 million extension in April even though they brought in Winston on a one-year deal.

The former BYU star is 4-of-5 passing for 86 yards in 2020 and 10-of-18 for 205 yards in his limited time at the position. Hill, 30, has 34 carries for 186 yards this season, nearly eclipsing career-highs set in 2018, and has six catches on eight targets for 74 yards.

Hill has maintained he sees himself as a future starting quarterback in the league. He also took snaps in Brees’ absence last week.

Winston stepped in as QB2 for injured Brees

Winston took over for Brees to start the third quarter in a 27-13 win against the San Francisco 49ers. He was 6-of-10 for 63 yards, and though head coach Sean Payton didn’t tip his hat in either backup’s direction, it appeared as though the 26-year-old former No. 1 pick would be back as a starter.

Brees, 41, is expected to miss at least two weeks.
