Yahoo Finance Why NFL great Joe Theismann is trading risky stocks
Passive investing bores NFL legend turned entrepreneur Joe Theismann. His remedy to prevent investing boredom? More active trading in higher than average risk stocks.
“I trade equities as a hobby so it’s something I enjoy very much,” Theismann told Yahoo Finance on the sidelines of the Achilles Gala in New York City on Wednesday. “One of the stocks I like is Micron Technologies (MU). I think there is an opportunity out there. And of course I have invested in some of the cannabis stocks. It’s an alternative to possibly reducing the amount of opioids in the society down the road.”
Theismann says he invests mostly in U.S. stocks. The U.S.-China trade war’s ever-present potential to hurt stocks doesn’t worry Theismann. In his view, successfully picking stocks comes more down to betting on good leadership and on companies in emerging sectors.
“I think financial investing is a process. I look for what I think is an emerging area. I think biotechs to me are something that there are a lot of different drugs in the pipeline based on things happening in society,” Theismann added.
Theismann spent 12 seasons at the quarterback position with the Washington Redskins. He was a two-time Pro Bowler and helped guide the Redskins to two straight Super Bowl appearances. Theismann won one of those battles, Super XVII.
After a career ending leg injury in 1985 by New York Giants linebackers Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson, Theismann quickly made the booth to become a sportscaster and did numerous TV commercials. He continues to meet with active and retired military service members and is a motivational speaker.
