Cam Newton catches TD in what could be his last game for Patriots

Quarterback Cam Newton could be playing his final game for the New England Patriots on Sunday, but he gave them a fantastic parting gift against the New York Jets.

In the third quarter, Newton and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers pulled off a touchdown play that had Meyers as the passer and Newton as the receiver. Newton caught a pass from Meyers and ran it right into the end zone.

Not only was that a neat and unexpected play, it also tied the game at 14. It has been a difficult season for the Pats, their first without Tom Brady at quarterback since he was drafted in 2000, and losing to the bottom-feeding Jets in their season finale would be an indignity that’s hard to take. They took the lead later in the third quarter.

New England eventually won, 28-14, to finish 7-9.

There’s one thing that makes this touchdown even more special. On NFL RedZone, host Scott Hanson told a story about a connection between Newton and Meyers. Apparently Newton coached a flag football team years ago, and can you guess who the quarterback was on that team? None other than Meyers. You can bet the two of them talked about that when Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels drew up that play.
