Rob Gronkowski's first NFT card collection brings in over $1.2 million

Rob Gronkowski's newest side hustle is already raking in the cash.

Gronk's exclusive NFT trading card collection launched on OpenSea over the weekend, and it was a major success. According to Rosenfield Media Group, all but one of the 349 available cards have sold out. The total? More than $1.2 million. Not bad for crypto cards that only exist on the internet.

The collection contained five unique cards, with four of them featuring art from one of Gronkowski's four Super Bowl appearances, including his most recent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The fifth card has art from all four of his Super Bowl appearances. 87 editions were available for each of the four main cards, but the fifth card is limited to just a single edition.

That fifth card is also the only one that's still available to purchase. It's up for auction until 7pm ET on Sunday, and the bids aren't cheap. It's currently up to over $86,000, and it's expected to fetch even more. It's already bested the priciest card from the weekend, a first edition of the Super Bowl XLIX card that went for $80,000.

If you win the auction for that magic fifth card, you get more than just a one-of-a-kind virtual trading card. The winner gets a chance to meet Gronk and attend one of his NFL games, plus VIP all-access tickets for the next "Gronk Beach" event, including an on-stage DJ Booth experience.

Gronk is first NFL player to launch NFT collection

Gronk's NFT trading card collection is a first for an NFL player, and this successful first try could open up opportunities for more players to follow in Gronk's (presumably large) footsteps. It could even lead to the NFL launching their own NFT shingle, like the NBA has already done.

NBA Top Shot, which is the NBA's NFT trading card brand, is extremely lucrative. Those cards, which feature highlights called "moments," brought in over $200 million in February alone. That market for NFL players is essentially untapped, and the NFL Players Association is paying close attention.

The NFL may still be in wait-and-see mode, but Gronk has already broken ground. He's not just Rob Gronkowski: creator of "Gronk Beach" anymore. He's Rob Gronkowski: NFL business trailblazer.
