New $2 coins celebrating the Olympic and Paralympic games are being released for Woolworths customers. The coins will only be available via change in stores, so it could be worth paying in cash the next time you go grocery shopping.

Woolworths is partnering with the Royal Australian Mint to release four new limited edition $2 coins. These will be available from Wednesday, July 17, with a new coin released each week.

“To celebrate the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games, the Royal Australian Mint are releasing four new coins. Check your change in stores to secure one of these limited edition coins,” Woolworths said.

There are three 2024 Australian Olympic Team themed coins to collect and one 2024 Australian Paralympic Team coin. They are coloured green and gold.

The $2 Australian Olympic Team Community coin will be the first coin released and features a kangaroo, emu, Commonwealth Star and the Olympic rings.

The other Olympic Team coins, AllezAus and Olympism, feature kangaroos competing in Paris with the Eiffel Tower depicted in the background.

Here’s when you can get your hands on the coins:

  • 2024 $2 Australian Olympic Team Community - July 17

  • 2024 $2 Australian Olympic Team AllezAus - July 31

  • 2024 $2 Australian Olympic Team Olympism - August 14

  • 2024 $1 Australian Paralympic Team - August 28

They aren’t the only coins celebrating the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In May, the Mint released two Olympic Team coins and two Paralympic Team coins.

This included a 2024 $1 Coloured Uncirculated Australian Olympic Team coin which showed a swimmer along with colourful lane dividers and a 2024 $1 Coloured Uncirculated Paralympic Team coin that depicts a table tennis player hitting mid swing.

“These stunning keepsakes will be treasured for years to come, and will serve as a reminder of the sense of pride and achievement we have in our athletes,” Mint CEO Leigh Gordon said.

Both $1 coins retailed for $20, however they have recently sold for double that amount on eBay with one seller netting $85 for the pair of coins this week.
