What is the ‘it was never that serious’ sound from?

If this sound hasn’t popped up on your FYP yet, do you know what it never was? That serious.

The latest TikTok trend is all about diffusing stressful or chaotic situations — because, in the end, was it ever that serious? The ironic meme was started by one content creator’s deadpan line delivery and blew up with the help of Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp.

Where does the “it was never that serious” TikTok sound come from?

The sound was created by @princessazula0. On Nov. 7, 2022, she posted a video saying, “You know what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious. Quite frankly, it will never be that serious.”

The soundbite has since been used in over 62,000 TikTok videos. People use it to express their feelings on life’s serious and not-so-serious matters.

Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp comes out

Actor Noah Schnapp helped spread the sound’s virality when he dubbed his coming-out story with it.

“When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘we know,'” Schnapp wrote.

The video received 70.5 million views and 12.9 million likes on TikTok.

Examples of the “it was never that serious” trend

“When my toddlers have a full on fist fight over a toy that we literally have two of,” @maiaknight joked in a caption.

“Me trying to convince my best friend that my situationship didn’t almost cause a psychotic break…” @rickyravv said in a TikTok.
