NBA sets free agency start date, CBA tweaks for 2020-21 season

This NBA offseason is going to move fast.

The league and the NBPA agreed on new provisions to the current collective bargaining agreement and set the official start of free agency on Monday night.

Free agency to start on Nov. 20

Free agency ahead of the 2020-21 season will begin at 6 p.m. ET on Nov. 20, just two days after the NBA draft. Signings can then start on Nov. 22 at 12:01 p.m. ET.

The NBPA approved the 72-game regular season last week, which is set to start on Dec. 22 and wrap up just before the Olympics kick off in Tokyo next summer. Training camps will open on Dec. 1, just 51 days after the end of the NBA Finals, which marks by far the shortest offseason in league history. Rookies who are drafted on Nov. 18 will have just more than a month before their respective season openers.

The NBA has yet to announce schedules for next season, though it is expected to include baseball-style road trips to limit travel amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While starting the season this soon wasn’t something many players had hoped for — Los Angeles Lakers guard Danny Green even went as far as to suggest that players would sit out early games — the NBA will save between $500 million and $1 billion in revenue by starting in December.

The salary cap and luxury tax will remain the same next season at $109.1 million and $132.7 million, respectively — something teams have reportedly been expecting due to the coronavirus hiatus in the middle of last season. They will both increase anywhere between three and 10 percent in subsequent seasons under the current CBA.
