In this episode of In The Know’s The Guide, menswear expert Jovel Roystan chats with Dex Robinson, stylist to NBA and NFL stars. The two discuss their fashion must-haves for a night out with the boys.

1. When you’re going to a bar or restaurant

For a chill dinner meet-up, you want to be prepared for the unexpected.

“You never know who’s going to be there so you want to look good but make it look effortless,” Roystan says.

Roystan always starts with a base layer, usually a graphic T-shirt like a Martine Rose sleeveless punk vest. But polos and crew necks make great options too. Next, he layers it with an overshirt.

“From there keep everything basic down below,” Roystan advises. “We throw on some denim, some cargos or maybe some low tops, some Chelsea boots. You’re good to go.”

2. When you’re going to the casino

Robinson is from the DMV area so he’s usually headed to the casino with the fellas.

“I may throw on a Bottega, a cropped shirt. Maybe I’ll do like a cargo at the bottom and some Dunks. Throw on one of my N.A.R.D. hats,” Robinson says.

3. When you’re hitting up an after party

When it comes to pulling an all-nighter, Roystan says it’s time to “turn up.” He suggests layering an outerwear statement piece, like a Boy London bomber jacket, motorcycle jacket or a DXD-3 suede patch jacket.

“Just go for statement pieces that really let your personality out,” Roystan says.

For his final look, Roystan chooses a graphic T-shirt, COS leather overshirt, Weekday Sharp leather jeans and Comme des Garcons Converse sneakers.

“I think beyond looking good, I feel great because no matter what plans we may get into after the after-party, I feel like I’ll be comfortable,” Roystan says.

4. Your ultimate must-haves

“If you ask me a watch is a must-have for a guy’s night out,” Roystan explains. “It’s a really cool way to have a little style flex without saying the words.”

Watches subtly offer a lot of variety. Straps come in a plethora of colors and materials and there are tons of analog and digital designs to choose from. Roystan opts for a Fossil two-tone gold and silver watch.

But for Robinson, a bag is the essential item he can’t leave the house without.

“I don’t go anywhere without a bag. I have my bag with me at all times,” Robinson says.

Robinson’s final piece of advice for men was to step out of their comfort zone and experiment with style.

“Don’t be afraid to step out of the box, that’s how you find out where you really thrive in terms of fashion,” Robinson says. “It’s trying other things. Until you put it on, you don’t really know if that’s the silhouette for you.”
