Nanoco Group's (LON:NANO) investors will be pleased with their impressive 101% return over the last year

Unfortunately, investing is risky - companies can and do go bankrupt. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Nanoco Group plc (LON:NANO) share price has soared 101% in the last 1 year. Most would be very happy with that, especially in just one year! But it's down 5.6% in the last week. However, this might be related to the overall market decline of 0.3% in a week. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 46% in the last three years.

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

View our latest analysis for Nanoco Group

Nanoco Group wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last year Nanoco Group saw its revenue shrink by 70%. We're a little surprised to see the share price pop 101% in the last year. It just goes to show the market doesn't always pay attention to the reported numbers. Of course, it could be that the market expected this revenue drop.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Nanoco Group has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 101% in the last twelve months. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 10% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Nanoco Group is showing 5 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...
