Update at 5:30pm

A Myer spokesperson has confirmed with Yahoo Finance that all of Myer’s registers have come back online and have been working since just after 4pm.

“We had a technical issue this afternoon that affected registers at our stores. This issue has been rectified and registers are now working as per normal,” the sopkesperson said.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused during this time and can advise that stores will be trading as per normal tonight and tomorrow.”

Christmas shopping at Myer stores have ground to a halt as the department store giant struggles with an IT system that has crashed, leaving customers unable to pay for purchases.

Myer has confirmed with Yahoo Finance that a technical issue happened at roughly 1:20pm, which saw registers reboot across all the 61 stores around the country.

“Our teams are working to get registers up and running as quickly as possible,” a Myer spokesperson said.

The department store has said they have since seen a number of stores come back online, though others have remained offline.

Myer staff are working to get every register back up.

The online store has been unaffected by the point-of-sale system crash.

Frustrated Aussies have taken to social media to vent their frustrations.

“Myer Highpoint registers are down, can’t purchase anything just before Xmas. When will they be fixed?” one user posted on Myer’s Facebook page.

Another said: “On that one occasion per year when your registers are actually staffed you still go out of your way to avoid taking my money.”

Twitter user Mitchell Clark said he saw “crazy scenes” at a Myer store.

“After waiting 45 minutes in line and not even moving half way I gave up as well. They’ll be losing so much money today,” he said.

Pranay Agarwal was unimpressed, tweeting at Myer: “Are you guys planning to get the system up and running? Waited an hour already”.

Sarah J Ryan questioned why there seemed to be no contingency plan.
