Mum's 'genius' hack to stop kids raiding chocolate stash
A savvy mum has pulled the wool over her treat-happy kids’ eyes with a hack that is being described as ‘genius’.
Mum of two Katie Ilsley was at the end of her tether after her kids Oliver, 10, and Tilly, five, would not stop tucking into her chocolate Minstrel stash before their dinner, when she was struck with a lightbulb moment.
The 36-year-old realised that if she managed to disguise the chocolate goodies she would be able to snack away to her heart’s content without her children being the wiser.
“When you’re on your own with the kids, sometimes you’ll do anything for a bit of peace and quiet,” the mum says.
“When I buy snacks for myself, I don’t see them for very long before my children have eaten them all - even though I always make sure they already have something for themselves.”
The UK NHS (health) worker says it was after one particularly hectic week that inspiration struck.
“This week was very long and busy and I was cooking mushrooms with dinner and thinking about the pack of Minstrels I’d bought earlier,” she says, adding the kids were in and out of the kitchen at the time.
“I thought I wouldn’t get away with eating them in plain sight so I decided to put the chocolate in the empty mushroom packaging so they wouldn’t notice or ask any questions.”
When questioned by her mini detective, Katie simply said she was snacking on the raw vegetables as she cooked dinner.
“I told them I was just eating raw mushrooms, which I do like, so they weren’t surprised - they told me that was gross, and off they went, so I had it all to myself,” she says.
“I was just pleased that my last-minute trick worked so that I had five minutes of chocolate heaven!”

The mother-of-two decided to share her clever hack online, where it unexpectedly went viral - with other parents hailing the idea after having many relatable snack-stealing incidents with their own kids.
Her post unexpectedly racked up over 22,000 likes and went viral - with many mums dubbing her a 'genius'.
“With everything going on at the moment, life can be quite stressful so anything that puts a smile on someone's face or makes them laugh is important,” Katie reflected on the hilarious saga.
“So I posted a picture of my idea and thought it might make one or two people smile and then I didn’t realise it would have such an impact.
“A lot of people have been asking me to share my other hacks and are telling me to write a book about them all.
“It just made me laugh and was nice to hear that people enjoyed it.”
