One dead, multiple people injured in Texas mass shooting

One person has been killed and multiple people have been injured in another mass shooting event in the United States.

At least four people were injured in the shooting incident on Thursday (local time) at a business in Bryan, Texas, police said.

The shooter was gone when police arrived on the scene, the Associated Press reported.

Bryan Police Lt. Jason James said several people who were wounded had been taken to hospital.

Prior to the death being confirmed, CBS reported some of those in hospital were in a critical condition.

Employees of the business were being interviewed, James said, and witnesses had identified a suspect.

Bryan is about 160 kilometres northwest of Houston.

The motive of the shooter is not known but early witness reports said the gunman was selective in who he fired at.

After initially fleeing the scene, a suspect is now in custody following a pursuit which saw an officer shot in a nearby county, KBTX reported.

Joe Biden announces gun control push

The shooting came just hours after US president Joe Biden announced plans to boost gun control laws in the country after a string of mass shootings.

“This is not a partisan issue among the American people,” Biden insisted.

The president said he’s “willing to work with anyone to get it done,” gun control measures face slim prospects in an evenly divided Senate, where Republicans remain near-unified against most proposals.

Biden was joined at the event by Vice President Kamala Harris and Attorney General Merrick Garland. Garland said he was “under no illusions about how hard it is to solve the problem of gun violence” and emphasised a need for a “collective effort to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and save lives.”
