Motivator charged with WA COVID-19 breach

·1-min read

A motivational speaker from Victoria is in custody in Perth after allegedly failing to comply with COVID-19 directions.

The 49-year-old man arrived in Western Australia on Wednesday and was directed to self-quarantine for 14 days.

But checks found he wasn't in isolation and he was later arrested in Fremantle.

Police said it would be alleged the man gave a motivational speech in Rockingham on Wednesday and planned to give further speeches in Fremantle on Thursday and Friday.

They said further inquiries had also revealed he provided false information about where he had been in the 14 days before entering WA.

"Police will allege the man had been in NSW and Queensland in the 14 days prior to his arrival in WA," a statement said.

The man was charged with two counts of failing to comply with a direction and one count of giving false or misleading information.

He has been remanded in custody to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on July 23.

Details of the arrest and the man's speaking engagement have been provided to the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre to review any potential health risk and provide the required advice.
