Monster red-bellied black snake caught at Queensland school

Snake catchers have been called to a school in the Sunshine Coast to wrangle a huge red-bellied black snake.

Stu McKenzie, from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7, said catching the snake at the Nambour school on Friday was a bit of a challenge given how ‘healthy’ the reptile was.

“Have a go at the size of this Red Bellied Black Snake! What a healthy individual. It certainly proved quite difficult to catch!” he wrote on the snake catcher’s Facebook page on Friday.

Mr McKenzie told Yahoo News Australia the snake was around 1.5-metres long and much thicker than another red-bellied black snake he was called to remove earlier this month.

Red-bellied black snakes are venomous, although they are usually not aggressive unless provoked.

Spring is the start of snake season and Mr McKenzie offered advice to people who spotted a snake in their home.

“Please make sure you call a professional snake catcher, especially when you have a highly venomous snake at your home,” Mr McKenzie said.
