Mom forces herself to wear crop top all day to model body acceptance: ‘They notice so much more than we realize’

This mother wore a crop top despite her discomfort to promote body positivity to her daughter.

Mom and TikToker Arielle (@mermaidmomarielle) shared a meaningful conversation she had with her daughter about body positivity.

In the video, Arielle says, “So I was chatting with my daughter the other day and we were getting up and getting ready, and I usually sleep in crop tops, but I don’t really wear them out. And my daughter asked me, ‘Oh that looks cute! You should wear that.’ And I said, ‘Oh, I don’t know,’” at which point Arielle hugged her stomach to signify self-consciousness about that part of her body.

Arielle’s daughter picked up on her mother’s discomfort and inquired, “Oh, it’s because you don’t like your body, right?”

Then Arielle admits to her viewers, “I didn’t want her to know that. So I wore the crop top. And all day I tried to compliment my own body and talk to myself out loud like how I would like her to talk to her body one day.”

She continued, “I was not completely comfortable all day to be honest. But I feel like I need to get myself there so that I can be the best parent to [her].”

Kids are very easily influenced by parents when it comes to body image, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Small actions like only privately wearing clothing that shows off your body—for example as pajamas, like Arielle—can be picked up by observant and impressionable kids who may interpret the behavior as telling them that bodies are something to be ashamed of.

Instead of sending a negative message about her body image, Arielle chose to challenge herself to wear the crop top and to talk to herself about her body kindly so that she can be a good role model to her kids and encourage them to love their bodies, too!

TikTok viewers were inspired by Arielle’s decision! One user commented, “Kids have no clue how much they motivate us to be our best selves. Hope she continues to inspire you.”

Another TikToker wrote, “My mom cried about her weight in dressing rooms and at home my whole life. It made me afraid to gain weight.”

A fellow mom showed her love and support, commenting, “Yes mama, you are great! My daughter (7 years) helps me with my confidence… kids are 100% truthful as far as I’m concerned.”

Thanks to Arielle, parents on TikTok are reminded that kids really do notice everything, so it’s important to pay attention to what kind of example you’re setting for them!
