Mom captures the emotional moment her nervous son makes a friend on first day of school: ‘Why does this make me wanna cry?’

A sweet back-to-school moment is going viral on TikTok — and teaching adults that making friends doesn’t always have to be complicated.

Mom and TikToker @brooklynlikethebridge gained nearly 3 million views and 10,000 comments when she uploaded the touching video with the caption, “His first day of in person learning.”

Now, just like the emotional footage of teenage brothers collapsing into tears the second they meet their newborn sibling, the video is bringing people to tears around the world.

In the video, we see Brooklyn’s son walking ahead of her towards the crosswalk, ready to cross to his school.

“He was so worried he wouldn’t make friends at real school,” Brooklyn says in on-screen text.

Suddenly, a voice across the way catches her son’s attention.

“This boy yelled, ‘Hey I have the same shirt, wanna hang out?’” Brooklyn explains.

Her little boy looks down at his outfit — then breaks into a trot to cross the street (after looking both ways for cars, of course).

“I could feel his excitement,” writes Brooklyn.

We then see the two boys happily walk together into their school, instantly becoming BFFs — much to Mom’s relief.

Get your apron ready — it's pasta night:

‘This makes me so happy…’

Thousands of people rushed to Brooklyn’s comment section to share their emotional reactions.

“Why does this make me wanna cry? It’s all we want for them, someone to be kind!” one user shared.

“That kid doesn’t even know how incredible that little act of inclusion really is to the one worrying. Beautiful! His parents should be so proud,” another user wrote.

“When I tell you this made me extremely happy. I love when kids are happy, it makes me happy,” commented another user.

“I can just imagine the relief you felt knowing he has a new friend,” one user commented.

“What a comforting thing for you to witness mama. I bet he has a wonderful year at school!” another user wrote.

“This makes me so happy. Nothing’s harder for kids than to not feel they belong. Hope he finds great, true friends,” wished one user.

But many TikTokers mused over just how easy it is for kids to make new friends — and why adults can’t become BFFs over something as small as a shirt.

“Why can’t making friends in your 30’s be this simple?” asked one user.

Perhaps Brooklyn’s video will inspire more grown-ups to put aside their fears, approach a total stranger, and become besties over some inconsequential similarity.

After all, we humans all share this pale blue dot together. Why not find some common ground — even if it’s just a tiny sliver — and make a new friend today?
