Mollie King’s Favourite Things

 (Mollie King)
(Mollie King)

For those of us who grew up in the 00s, you will no doubt instantly recognise Mollie King as one-fifth of the girl group The Saturdays - and if you don’t, you missed out on epic shower singing of their hits like Ego, If This Is Love and covering Just Can’t Get Enough.

Five million records sold and four nationwide tours later, King went on to have a singing career all her own when the band split in 2014, while adding songwriting credits and countless TV appearances to her ever-growing schedule.

If you’ve not spotted the London-born beauty covering This Morning as one of the relief presenters or spinning around the dancefloor on Strictly back in 2017, you’ll be hearing her on the radio as a co-host on BBC Radio 1 alongside Matt Edmondson or on Best New Pop.

An advocate of all things beauty, health and wellness, King uses her platform to share tips and tricks with her 949k Instagram followers so it seemed a perfect fit for her to team up with Jessica Sepel, founder of JSHealth Vitamins and clinical nutritionist as an ambassador for the brand.

We caught up with the popstar-turned-presenter to find out the items she can’t live without.

What are you up to at the moment?

I have two shows on Radio 1 - one called Matt and Mollie which I do alongside Matt Edmondson - and another called Best New Pop which is all about celebrating the best pop releases each week. Pop music has always been a huge passion of mine so getting to talk about new up-and-coming artists is something I absolutely love, as well as having the first play of huge artists with their new singles! I also write a column for Marie Claire called the Feel Good Feed which is something I started doing over lockdown as a way to lift people, and myself too.

What is your skincare routine?

Growing up I really suffered with acne. Since then I have always looked after my skin and tried to offer it the best care I can. I love the Simple products - I always have their biodegradable wipes on me, and I love how gentle they are on my skin and how kind they are to the environment.

What’s the one item that you can’t live without?

At the moment I would say it’s my electric car. I have recently switched to electric and zipping around town seeing my family and friends is bringing me so much joy. After the past few years we’ve had, being reunited with friends and family in the flesh is just the absolute best.

How do you incorporate time for yourself into your busy schedule?

It’s definitely tricky and I’d be lying if I said I did it as much as I should. My parents often remind me to take a day to relax but I do like the feeling of being busy. My show on Radio 1 is Friday/Saturday/Sunday so I should really take Mondays to wind down, but it’s tricky when the rest of the world is starting back up. My favourite way to switch off and take time for myself is to take my dog Alfie on a walk. He needs a good hour’s walk each day so knowing that always means I have that hour getting some fresh air and exercise, it’s my favourite way to switch off!

What supplements are you taking at the moment?

JSHealth Hair and Energy. I had been reading such rave reviews about the brand for a longtime, I thought it was definitely time I gave it a go myself. With my job presenting, I am often up at 5am, so the idea of supplements helping me to really take care of myself was incredibly appealing. As well as looking after yourself on the outside, I think it’s super important to take care of yourself from the inside and I’ve really noticed the difference in my energy levels, quality of my skin and hair growth since I’ve been taking JSHealth products. The fact that it was founded by Jessica Sepel, a clinical nutritionist, gave me a lot of confidence in the products too.

How do you keep your hair so healthy?

I’ve always been really passionate about hair, and being blonde and constantly having highlights, it’s something I’ve always been on top of looking after. And the hair and energy supplements from JSHealth Vitamins have definitely made it feel fuller and thicker.

What do you do to ensure you live a healthy and balanced lifestyle?

I truly love working out. I definitely have days where I don’t want to go to the gym but I can guarantee that I always feel better after doing so and never regret going. I used to ski race for Team GB so am quite used to being disciplined when it comes to keeping fit and active. I also work hard on looking after my mental health as this is such an important part of our health. I always pick up the phone to a close friend or loved one if I’m feeling anxious or low, and it does always lift me.

Can you share your wellness commandments?

Drink as much water as you can (I’m still working on this one - I’m trying to walk around with a reusable bottle to remind myself!). Get to bed early - I always think the hours of sleep you get in before midnight are so much more effective than the hours after. Exercise daily - even if it’s just a walk, endorphins are an amazing thing. If you find a supplement that works for you, go with it.

What are your wardrobe staples?

A classic white shirt - it’s timeless and always helps an outfit look ‘put together’. A well fitting blazer - I love tailoring. A classic brogue - it will never let you down. A trench coat - you can’t go wrong.

Can you talk us through your favourite jewellery pieces?

My engagement ring has to be my absolute favourite. It brings back so many beautiful memories of when my partner, Stuart, asked me to marry him. Every time I look at it it brings me so much joy. I also have a very delicate gold bracelet which was my Nana’s which holds so much history.

What’s on your bookshelf right now?

I’m currently reading The Switch by Beth O’Leary which is a light hearted read that makes me smile before bed. I also love listening to audiobooks as I’m dyslexic so can’t speak highly enough on those. I think for anyone who finds reading difficult they are a real game changer.
