Model ‘traumatized’ after trying TikTok hair growing hack: ‘This gave me the heebie jeebies’

A model is speaking out about a popular TikTok beauty hack after it led to her accidentally washing her hair with maggots.

Grainne Gallanagh wanted to experiment with a viral TikTok trend that allegedly can help grow hair. The hack involves washing your hair with rice water, and the instructions simply say to let the rice soak in some water for a number of days before using it.

It’s not clear how long Gallanagh left the rice water out or how old her rice was. But when Gallanagh went to wash her hair, her sister heard her screaming. That’s because Gallanagh saw maggots in her hair and on the shower floor.

Rice grains contain larvae in them and when rice is stored for over three months at room temperature, the larvae can turn into maggots. It’s advised that if you do plan on keeping rice for over three months, you should put the unopened package into your freezer for three days and then put it in a dry, cool place.

Needless to say, Gallanagh was “traumatized.”

Fortunately, Gallanagh was able to laugh about the event, and she even shared her sister’s footage of her meltdown on her Instagram Stories.

“This gave me the heebie jeebies but I was laughing so hard,” one user commented on Gallanagh’s Instagram.

“Omg now my head is itching,” another said.
