Karl-Anthony Towns said he was hit by drunk driver, hospitalized last year

Karl-Anthony Towns had a terrible 2020.

On Thursday night, the Minnesota Timberwolves star revealed yet another incident that happened to him just before the start of the 2020-21 season — which left him hospitalized in Los Angeles.

Towns, on an Instagram Q&A on his story, said that he was hit by a drunk driver in Southern California during the offseason.

“My woman has held me down more than my world knows,” Towns wrote when asked how he stays strong, speaking about his girlfriend Jordyn Woods. “From my mother and family members dying (one on her birthday in Cabo), getting hit by a drunk driver (was 2 p.m. in the afternoon, FYI) in LA this offseason and staying with me in the hospital for the night and helping me in rehab, to this stint with COVID, she has been where with me every step of the way and stayed ten toes down.”

Specific details surrounding the accident and Towns’ hospital stay aren’t known.

Towns hit hard by COVID-19

Towns was hit by the coronavirus pandemic perhaps harder than anyone else in the basketball world.

The 25-year-old revealed last year that seven of his family members, including his mom, had died due to the coronavirus. His mom Jacqueline, a nurse, died in April after she was placed in a medically induced coma. Towns’ uncle and grandma also lost their lives to the virus.

Towns then announced earlier this month that he had contracted the coronavirus himself.

The former No. 1 overall pick has appeared in just four games for Minnesota this season, limited due to a wrist injury and his coronavirus diagnosis.

“I don’t even recognize most of my other games and years I’ve played and how I felt those days,” Towns said last month after dropping a double-double in their season-opener. “If I can be honest with ya’ll for a second, I mean, I don’t really recall or really care. I only understand what happened from April 13th on.

“Because you may see me smiling and stuff, but that Karl died on April 13. He’s never coming back, I don’t remember that man. You’re talking to the physical me, but my soul has been killed off a long time ago.”
