Miles Sanders questions Eagles' decision to bench Jalen Hurts: 'Nobody liked the decision'

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson picked a bad way to end a miserable season. By replacing Jalen Hurts with Nate Sudfeld, Pederson may have lost his locker room.

There were plenty of reports of Eagles players venting frustration about that decision, but few quotes from players directly ... until Tuesday.

Running back Miles Sanders spoke out against the Eagles’ benching of Hurts, telling 94WIP “nobody liked the decision.”

Sanders’ full quote:

“Oh man, If I’m being honest, nobody liked the decision. Nobody. And that’s all I can say. I don’t know who was the main person behind that decision, but all I know is there’s a lot of people on the team [who] was confused.”

Sanders didn’t specifically rip Pederson, but made it clear his teammates were frustrated with the move. That puts the whole franchise in a tough spot. If Pederson made the call, he’ll spend the entire offseason justifying the move to his players. If the front office wanted to tank, Pederson might be safe, but players are going to be angry with the organization. Neither option is desirable, especially for a team coming off a 4-11-1 season.

Jalen Hurts pulled for Nate Sudfeld in Week 17

The decision to bench Hurts during a Week 17 game against the Washington Football Team came as a shock to many. With the Eagles trailing by one score in the fourth quarter, Hurts was benched in favor of Sudfeld. Hurts hadn’t played well to that point, completing just 7 of 20 attempts for 72 yards and an interception, but he’s considered the future of the franchise.

The move didn’t work out for the Eagles. Sudfeld completed 5 of 12 attempts for 32 yards and an interception in the final quarter. The Eagles lost the contest 20-14.

Pederson will now spend the offseason hoping he didn’t lose more than that.
