Mets honor photographer who died from COVID-19 with cardboard cutout in photo pool

The New York Mets are using their seat-filling cardboard cutouts to pay tribute to a beloved member of the New York media.

Anthony Causi, a New York Post photographer for 25 years, died in April at age 48 after battling COVID-19. There was an outpouring of love and support at the time, especially for his wife and two young children, but there was no way for him to be honored at a baseball game with the season suspended due to the pandemic.

With MLB exhibition games now underway, there was finally a chance to pay tribute to Causi. The Mets found the perfect way: they took a cardboard cutout of Causi and set it in the photo pool — exactly where you’d find him during any Mets game.

The Yankees also honored him on Sunday during an exhibition game with the Mets, putting a tribute on the scoreboard and holding a moment of silence.

Causi spent his career photographing the New York sports scene, taking a number of iconic photos of Mets and Yankees stars over the years. He’s most remembered for his photo of Mariano Rivera jogging out to the mound from the bullpen.
