These 4 editor-recommended products soothe your skin after shaving and keep any irritation at bay

It’s obvious that skincare transcends gender. While the concept of “men’s skincare” is pretty flighty (clever marketing with woodsy fragrance notes and dark packaging does not make a men’s skincare product “work”), there actually are a couple of major differences between men and women’s skin.

According to dermatologist-backed skincare brand Dermalogica, besides having facial hair, there are actually “structural differences between men’s skin and women’s skin.”

Men have both 25 percent thicker and tougher skin than women’s. This is all due to testosterone stimulation in men’s skin.

While this leads to some men having more “resilient” skin that can withstand more wear and tear, when shaving comes into play, that’s when some men find themselves in a bind.

While facial shaving can lead to a more youthful skin appearance, Dermalogica adds that “it can also irritate skin and lead to more ingrown hairs or bumps.”

With shaving being a part of my weekly skincare routine for years, I’ve tested several products over time to find the ones that work best for freshly shaven men’s skin.

These five products have been the most consistent. They revive my skin after shaving and soothe any irritation potentially caused by the razor or trimmers.

From sulfur masks to skin-soothing moisturizers, check out the four products I use to keep my newly shaven skin in check.

After cleansing and toning with a hydrating toner, I apply a thin layer of this sulfur mask to pull out any impurities. This has significantly cleared up my ingrown hairs and minor razor bumps that arose after shaving.

2. Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Salicylic Acid Exfoliant, $29.50

After masking, I always follow up with a skin treatment — and this super popular No. 1 best-selling Paula’s Choice BHA liquid exfoliant has been a staple in my skincare routine for over three years. And over 20,000 Amazon shoppers agree that it’s that great.

Using a cotton round, I gently apply this product all over my face, avoiding my eye area.

3. Peach & Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum, $39

After masking and exfoliating, I go in with a hydrating serum and this skin-refining option from Peach & Lily has been my tried-and-true for over a year.

In addition to deeply hydrating my skin, this powerhouse product helped treat a bunch of concerns I had including uneven skin texture, exaggerated pores, dryness and acne spots. Also, one bottle sells every three minutes, so grab one while you can!

4. Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream, $22.18

To round it all out, I apply a calming, fragrance-free moisturizer and this Korean skincare staple is the best I’ve used to date.

This cult-classic Amazon-recommended cream is super rich and soothes and calms any redness or irritation, making it perfect for after-shave skincare.
