Grizzlies rookie Ja Morant out with back spasms, listed as 'week-to-week'

Memphis Grizzlies rookie Ja Morant will be sidelined for the foreseeable future while dealing with back spasms, the team announced on Saturday afternoon.

Morant aggravated the back spasms in their 103-94 loss to the Utah Jazz on Friday night at FedExForum after first suffering the spasms in their loss to the Indiana Pacers on Monday.

The 20-year-old did not travel to Minnesota for their game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday, and will be held out for “a period of short-term off-loading.” He is listed as “week-to-week.”

Morant, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft this summer, has averaged 18.6 points and 6.4 assists in 17 games this season while playing nearly 29 minutes per game. The former Murray State standout put up 11 points and had four assists against the Jazz on Friday night, which marked the team’s sixth-straight loss.

The Jazz rallied back from a 15-point halftime deficit to grab the win, thanks largely to 16 fourth-quarter points from forward Bojan Bogdanovic. The 30-year-old led Utah with 33 points and eight rebounds, shooting 12-of-20 from the field. Donovan Mitchell dropped 20 points, and Rudy Gobert finished with a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

“I’m glad we played the second half like we did, opposed to the first,” Jazz coach Quin Snyder said, via the Associated Press. “We came out competitive and threw ourselves into the defense. We were struggling offensively in the first half and forgot about that and the offense came.”

Ja Morant will miss Sunday's game against the Timberwolves and is listed as "week-to-week" with back spasms.
