With Prince Harry touching down in the UK from LA to begin quarantining ahead of Prince Philip's funeral, friends have now claimed Meghan Markle didn't want to attend as she "doesn't want to be the centre of attention".

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson also previously confirmed Meghan, who is heavily pregnant with the couple's second baby, was "advised by her physician not to travel".

The sources have, however, claimed Meghan and Prince Philip "had a special bond and she adored him".

"Meghan said her main concern right now is supporting Harry. She said she left it up to him as to whether or not she would attend the funeral," an insider told the Daily Mail.

"Meghan said it's during these times when family should come together, put their differences aside and unite as one. She said this is what Prince Philip would want and that she's willing to forgive and move forward."

Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, is reportedly "adamant" she not travel while pregnant during the pandemic.

"Doria insisted that Meghan stay behind and support Harry from afar," the source said. "Like Harry, Doria is very protective of Meghan and doesn't want to see her putting her own health at risk. Stress is the last thing Meghan needs right now."

The insider added Meghan's absence from the funeral will not change her relationship with the Queen, who understands why she won't be able to make it and would want her to stay safe and healthy for the baby.

"Meghan said this is the opportune time for [Harry] to mend his relationship with his brother and his dad. She doesn't need to be there for that," the source said.

Harry has not been to the UK since he and Meghan left in March 2020 just as the pandemic and lockdowns began worldwide. This will be his first opportunity to reunite with his brother, Prince William, and his father, Prince Charles, who is believed to be "looking forward" to the reunion.

Harry will be able to leave quarantine after five days rather than 10 if he provides a negative coronavirus test, however, he will be able to attend Philip's funeral regardless, as official guidelines state those coming from abroad can leave isolation "on compassionate grounds".

Philip's funeral will be held on Saturday at 3pm London time with just 30 guests due to coronavirus restrictions.
