Marcus Trescothick has been named England’s “elite batting coach” as part of a slew of ECB coaching appointments.

The popular former England batsman has worked with the national team on an ad hoc basis in recent years. He will leave his role as Somerset assistant coach to take the job, which Jonathan Trott had also been in the running for.

England have also appointed from New Zealand spinner Jeetan Patel and former England seamer Jon Lewis to the equivalent spin and pace bowling roles respectively. Patel is with England in India, while Lewis flew home after two Tests.

Lewis has a strong relationship with Jofra Archer from their days at Sussex together, and beat West Indies legend Curtly Ambrose to the job.

Lewis steps up from the role of England Under-19s coach, which has been “reconfigured” and filled by Richard Dawson, who leaves his post as Gloucestershire head coach.

Former England spinner Dawson will coach the U19s team, while also being involved at Lions and international level, with particular focus on spin bowling.
