Manchester United XI vs Roma: Donny van de Beek starts - team news, lineup, Europa League squad today

(ES Composite)

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given Donny van de Beek a rare start in a strong lineup as Manchester United look to avoid any unwanted surprises in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against AS Roma this evening.

United were in real trouble at half-time of the first leg, trailing 2-1 at Old Trafford - but a second-half blitz saw the Red Devils hit five goals without reply to canter to a 6-2 win.

Solskjaer’s side now boast a four-goal advantage heading to Rome for the second leg on Thursday night, and are huge favourites to progress to a Europa League final against either Arsenal or Villarreal.

Roma need to score four goals at the Stadio Olimpico to have any chance of reaching the final - and though that seems a long shot, they netted twice in 45 minutes in Manchester and could have had more against a shaky United defence.

With that in mind, Solskjaer has gone with a solid XI to start the game well, especially given that has been a weak spot for United this season. No players are at rusk of suspension from the final unless they are sent off in Rome, so Solskjaer doesn’t have to consider resting any key personnel.

Van de Beek comes into midfield alongside Fred, with Mason Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani in attack. Marcus Rashford has likely been rested, but Greenwood is pushing him for his starting role and has another chance to impress tonight.

David de Gea comes back in as the current No2 cup goalkeeper, while Eric Bailly starts in place of Victor Lindelof.

Man Utd XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Maguire, Shaw; Van de Beek, Fred; Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes, Pogba; Cavani

Subs: Grant, Henderson, Lindelof, Mata, Rashford, Amad, Telles, Matic, Williams, Tuanzebe, McTominay, Elanga

Injury list: James, Martial, Jones

Manchester United squad: De Gea, Henderson, Grant, Bishop, Wan-Bissaka, Williams, Lindelof, Bailly, Maguire, Tuanzebe, Shaw, Telles, Matic, McTominay, Fred, Pogba, Fernandes, Mata, Diallo, Van De Beek, Elanga, Rashford, Greenwood, Cavani
