Manchester City’s preparations for Wednesday night’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Borussia Dortmund were disrupted after fireworks were let off outside their hotel in Germany early this morning.

The City squad were twice awoken by a separate series of explosions and club security staff then reportedly foiled a third attempt by a gang to set off more.

City are 2-1 up from the first leg last week as they bid to progress to the semi-finals for the first time under Pep Guardiola.

Having been knocked out in the quarter-finals in the past three seasons, City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan says the team needs to learn to handle difficult moments.

“We need to learn that it is normal to struggle,” said the Germany midfielder.

“Maybe it is something we are not used to, going behind or struggling, because we are used to dominating games and having possession, but it is completely normal in the Champions League to struggle.”
