Yahoo Finance Man wins almost $3m after being sold wrong ticket
A man has become a millionaire after he was mistakenly given the wrong lottery ticket while stopping off at a service station to get some change.
The man who won the $A2.8 million had stopped off at a service station when he decided the buy a $10 Lucky 7’s ticket.
“I stopped to put air in my wife’s truck tyre and I needed some change for the machine,” the 57-year-old man from the US state of Michigan said, according to Michigan Lottery Connect.
“I went in to get change and asked for a $10 Lucky 7’s ticket. The clerk handed me the $20 ticket by mistake.
“He offered to exchange it for me, but something told me to keep it. I am sure glad I did!”
The man went to the lottery headquarters to claim his prize, and instead of collecting the entire win over a number of annual payments, he opted to accept a one-time lump sum payment of roughly $A1.8 million.
The man said he intends to buy a new home and then save the rest of his winnings.
There have been some recent lucky lotto winners in Australia too.
Last week, a couple from Victoria won $80 million from Powerball, the third highest amount won in a lottery in Australia.
The couple found out about their win four days after the winning numbers were drawn because they forgot to check their tickets.
“I was sitting there and I had bought two tickets with my husband, and I said ‘I haven’t checked those tickets yet’,” the woman said.
“When I scanned the first one on my phone, it said ‘no win’. I did the next one, and there was confetti all over my phone.”
The couple has decided to wait until after the coronavirus pandemic to spend their money.
