Man infuriated by sister’s ‘disrespectful’ behavior when visiting his apartment: ‘Actions have consequences’

A brother is at his wit’s end with his sister, who doesn’t respect his living space.

He asked Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum for advice. His sister needs to use the Wi-Fi at his home for school. The trouble is she never locks the door or closes the window when she leaves. To make matters worse, the brother is a jeweler and fears his expensive work could be stolen.

Decode and demystify Gen Z's latest online slang terms with In The Know's new glossary.

“My sister is taking college courses, but her roommate canceled their internet,” the brother said. “So she asked me if she could come to my place for her classes. They’re in the mornings after I leave for work, so I had to give her an extra key so she can go in when I’m not there. My ONLY rule was to absolutely make sure to lock the door before you leave. It’s serious for me because, in my neighborhood, there’s been more break-ins in the last couple [of] years. Luckily it hasn’t happened to me because I take precautions. On three different occasions, my sister had left my place with the windows open or the door unlocked. I’m a jeweler. I bring my work home with me. Gold and expensive jewelry that I keep locked in my house could be stolen because she left a damn window open or left my front door unlocked for 20 mins while she went to grab something to eat in between classes.”

But he had the last straw when his sister put everything in jeopardy.

“Then last week I came home early, and my freaking front door was OPEN,” the brother wrote. “[I was] literally about to have a heart attack, but luckily no one actually came in. My sister left in a hurry to work and just…didn’t close the door completely or lock it when she left. I was extremely pissed, and after that, I took my key back from her. Now she’s not happy because she has to do her class outside on my porch, and it feels humiliating to her, and it’s really uncomfortable. I don’t know if I’m overthinking it or not by not letting her come back in when I’m not there.”

Redditors thought the brother was right to rescind the key.

“She’s irresponsible and disrespectful,” a user wrote.

“She should have had the decency to make sure his door was shut and locked,” someone commented.

“Actions have consequences,” another person said.
