Manchester City host Leeds United in the Premier League today. The Premier League leaders hold a 14-point lead in the table and need only 11 more to secure a third league title in four years under Pep Guardiola.
They head into this one fresh from a Champions League quarter-final win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, although they left it late with Phil Foden grabbing what could prove a crucial second goal in injury time against the Germans. There was more good news too, with star man Kevin De Bruyne confirming the agreement of a new two-year contract extension with the club.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side remain one of the most entertaining in the division and, surely free from any concerns about relegation, will hope to give their favoured foes today a scare or two. Indeed, the reverse fixture at Elland Road was one of the best games of the season so far with a see-saw affair eventually ending all square.
“I am looking forward to the game. We faced them in the first game and we know how difficult it was and this will not be an exception,” Guardiola said in his pre-match press conference ahead of this game. “The quality of the manager and the backroom staff shows in the position in the table. They were promoted last season and are already safe with 42 points and seven games left. They’ve done incredibly well all season.
“We have to do our best to get a result and the game will not be over until 94 or 95 minutes. The resilience they have I’ve never seen before. They fight to the end. Even at 3-0 or 4-0 (down) they continue and continue. It will be a tight game but, at the same time, I trust a lot in the players. They feel that we are in a position that we are close.”
