A man has been charged and denied bail for allegedly cutting cables then stealing property.

The 24-year-old is accused of cutting telecommunications cables to bring down EFTPOS systems in neighbourhood retailers in a number of incidents in the Illawarra and south-west Sydney.

The man then allegedly made "a number of fraudulent purchases" during the chaos that ensued while those businesses were offline.

The accused was arrested in Liverpool on Tuesday and charged with 30 counts related to damaging property, tampering of communications carrier facilities and dishonestly obtaining property by deception.

Police investigations are continuing, while the man will be in custody until his appearance at the Wollongong Local Court on August 20.
