If you loved Netflix’s ‘Bridgerton,’ you’ll want to read the steamy book series next

2020 was the year of several binge-worthy TV shows. You might remember that one of the most-watched shows was Netflix’s Tiger King, and you probably couldn’t get enough of HBO’s Max The Undoing later in the year.

But one of 2020’s most underrated shows happens to be Netflix’s Bridgerton, which came out on Christmas Day and has finally caught on like wildfire.

Bridgerton, the show that 2020 needed, is a light-hearted, part romantic comedy, part period drama that you could escape in, and with a gorgeous cast to boot. And of course, you can’t forget that one of its producers just so happens to be Shonda Rhimes, so if you’re a Shondaland fan, we know you probably binged the series in just one day.

However, the show is not your average period piece. Even though it’s said to be set in the early 1800s and is about a well-to-do family (the Bridgertons) in London during the Regency era, Bridgerton gives off a modern feel to it — just how Rhimes envisioned it to feel. With its diverse casting and its nod to modern-day music (we won’t spoil the soundtrack for you), it was an unexpected delight for the end of 2020.

Throughout the series, an unknown narrator going by the name of Lady Whistledown knows everyone’s secrets. But that’s not the best part: Everyone can’t stop talking about the steamy budding romances (yes, there are multiple), which was on purpose, according to Bridgerton co-creator Chris Van Dusen.

“I wanted the experience to not be so different from the experience of reading a romance novel in terms of things feeling fun and sexy, a little bit dangerous, and a little bit of a wild ride at times,” Van Dusen said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “We wanted to leave viewers hot and bothered and breathless at points.”

But if you went into the show blindly like me, knowing nothing about its plotline or origin story, you probably didn’t realize that the show originally came from a series of nine books by Julia Quinn.

The first book, The Duke and I, published in 2000, happens to be the one that inspired the show since it’s about the main characters Daphne Bridgerton and the Duke of Hastings, Simon Bassett. However, the later books are all about the Bridgerton family, so it will be interesting to see if the Netflix series takes a similar approach of featuring more storylines than just Daphne and Simon.

While Quinn has lengthy excepts on her site that you can start devouring now, the Bridgerton books are also available on Amazon in both Kindle and print formats. Pro tip: It’s cheaper to read all nine books with a Kindle Unlimited membership, and you can receive six months free right now!

Since there’s no set date for season two of Bridgerton, you have plenty of time to begin binging the book series now, and you can shop all nine below.
