Sometimes it’s hard to focus and find the motivation to do your school work, clean your room, apply for a new job, exercise or even make dinner. I get it! That’s why I knew I had to learn more when one of my coworkers told me that she lights a candle at the beginning of each day and sets a daily intention.

While I had heard of aromatherapy, I hadn’t thought about literally lighting a fire under my goals. My coworker said she chooses an uplifting scent to light each morning before starting her day. While the candle didn’t force her to do anything, the routine helped center her focus, acted as a positive symbol and helped her visualize and manifest results.

Nonetheless, there are plenty of guides on how to use candles to set a daily intention. “The candle serves as an external place to focus your intention and to direct that intention out into the world,” Naha Armády, the senior healer and teacher at House of Intuition in Los Angeles, told Nylon.

Recently, I got my hands on one of Brooklinen’s candles that’s quite literally called Good Intentions. Yes, I’m talking about Brooklinen, the bedding brand. It also makes candles — actually, it released a new line of them in September 2022. A different mood, action or thing inspires each one. For example, Rise is a warm and spicy citrus scent described as “an on-switch for motivation.” Interlude is a warm, woody, floral scent that’s “like a power nap in candle form.” You get it?

Good Intentions is my favorite, with notes of basil, minty buchu leaf and citrus. According to the product description, the scent helps with focus, clarity and a moment of mindfulness. To me, it smells fresh, bright and uplifting. I’ve been lighting it each morning as I set my daily intention, and it’s already helped me focus on my goals and follow through on ideas.

You can purchase the candles for $35. Brooklinen also sells bundles of four 2-ounce votives for $59. The Up & Up Set includes Rise, Bright Idea, Interlude and Gather scents. The Downtime Set includes Good Intentions, Happy Hour, Restore and Love Note scents.

If you’re more into the scent than the intention setting, Brooklinen also makes reed diffusers for keeping your home smelling extra fresh.

Either way, scent is a powerful thing. And if you think lighting a candle could help you set a daily intention and center your focus, it’s worth a shot.
