Yahoo Finance Londoners back on buses as record number of trips made over weekend
Londoners made a record number of bus journeys over the weekend as the capital continued to bounce back from the pandemic.
According to data from Transport for London, there were 3.72 million bus journeys made on Saturday, up three per cent on the previous weekend and around three quarters of normal pre-pandemic demand.
Yesterday the number of journeys jumped one per cent to 2.59 million — a rise of one per cent on last week. The Tube also experienced one of its busiest weekends since the start of the Covid-19 crisis with the number of journeys rising one per cent to 1.93 million on Saturday — 67 per cent of its pre-pandemic demand.
Meanwhile London Mayor Sadiq Khan has reiterated his support for compulsory face masks on public transport.
He said: “There’s a couple of things we can be doing. We should have face masks compulsory on public transport, this voluntary system isn’t working as effectively as before, and secondly we need to make sure we have better ventilation in our schools.”
