Living on London’s canals: revamped city-pad narrowboat for sale for £125,000 — but there’s a catch

A seriously sleek option for anyone experiencing the first pangs of leavers' regret is this 59ft narrowboat currently moored in the Battlebridge Basin on Regent's Canal, King's Cross.

With a price tag of £125,000, it might be the best value pied-à-terre option on the market right now.

The catch: Olive the narrowboat does not have a permanent mooring, which are expensive and can be hard to come by, so owners will have to budget for one or move their home every 14 days.

It's also harder to get a mortgage on a boat than a house or flat, so floating homes are often sold to cash buyers.

Yet, for the undeterred, Olive is a real design gem.

Its architectural designer owners revamped the space, even painting the exterior a warm green in 2020, to create a home for themselves and opted to become 'continuous cruisers' — moving mooring every two weeks — like so many canal-based Londoners.

Ingenious space-saving ideas are on show throughout the carefully planned living space and one bedroom, and a pretty outdoor seating area is found on the bow deck.

Minimalist decor and a neutral palette seem befitting of a new life on the open canals, while high-end appliances in the functional kitchen area give the home a company city-pad feel.

A tiled bathroom has a shower cubicle, countertop sink and an eco-friendly composting toilet. There are also two solar panels on the roof, ideal for embracing the off-grid lifestyle.

"It's been on the market for about two weeks," says John McDavid of Aucoot who is marketing the narrowboat. "We've had lots of viewings, lots of people are thinking about it."

"You don't get boats that look that good very often really."

Olive the narrowboat is for sale for £125,000. It's available for viewings at a temporary mooring in King's Cross.
