Liverpool vs Real Madrid: Jurgen Klopp makes vow to fans ahead of another big night at Anfield

Jurgen Klopp has pledged to Liverpool fans that his players will “fight” for them in tonight’s Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid.

Liverpool, who memorably stunned Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield having lost the first leg of their 2019 semi-final 3-0 at the Nou Camp, have another tough task on their hands this year after going down 3-1 to Real in the Spanish capital last week.

Wednesday’s match also takes place five years to the day since they pulled off an added-time victory to beat Klopp’s former side Borussia Dortmund in a Europa League quarter-final second leg, having been 4-2 down on aggregate with 24 minutes to go.

Liverpool also have on their CV the second-half turnaround from 3-0 down to AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final - while six months before that another Steven Gerrard-inspired performance saw them scrape through the group stage as they scored three second-half goals to beat Olympiacos.

While Liverpool fans will not be present at Anfield this time around due to Covid-19 restrictions, Klopp says his squad will look to ‘channel their enegry’ for another famous night on Merseyside.

“What we will not lose sight of is how good we are,” Klopp said in his programme notes.

“The talent we have. The magic in our dressing room and the character required to make special moments happen. We have the entire package at Liverpool.

“My job - and the job of the boys - is to channel your energy despite the forced distance. We know it’s still there, therefore we can still use it.

“I’m not a believer in promises when it comes to results, but I can say with certainty we go out there to fight for all our supporters as if they were with us.”

Should Liverpool pull off the comeback, they would face Chelsea in the semi-finals.
