Project host slams the royals' comment on Meghan's miscarriage

The Project's Lisa Wilkinson has slammed Buckingham Palace's statement on Meghan Markle's tragic miscarriage, arguing it's proof of why she and Prince Harry left the family.

The Duchess of Sussex revealed the heartbreaking news in an article for The New York Times on Wednesday, saying she lost her second child after feeling a "sharp cramp" while changing her son Archie's nappy in July.

When asked for a statement on the matter, Buckingham Palace's response was simply, "It's a deeply personal matter which we would not comment on."

Lisa shared on Thursday night that she thought Meghan's article was "incredibly moving", but thought the royal family's statement lacked empathy.

"It was incredibly moving to read that," Lisa said. "It's also a reminder of why they left the royal family. You know, Charles Spencer, Diana's brother, he's spoken about it, and really sent his deep condolences."

"The Royal Family, in the meantime, say this is a deeply personal matter, we don't discuss this.

"So, had Meghan still been part of the royal family, she wouldn't have been able to share that story and help lots of other women and couples going through the same thing."

Meghan stunned the world when she shared the tragic story of falling ill at home and being rushed to the hospital, saying she watched Harry's "heart break as he tried to hold the shattered pieces of mine" while they grieved for their unborn baby.

"I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second," she wrote.

"Hours later, I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband's hand. I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both our tears.

"Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we'd heal."

"Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few."

Vanity Fair's Royal Editor Katie Nicholl has shared that she believes the Royal Family knew of the tragedy for months and were briefed before the article was published.

She added that Royal Family had been supportive of Meghan and Harry despite their statement.

"They were aware of what had happened," she said. "Harry was in constant touch with them over the summer and they knew what they were going through."

The couple are known to want two children with Harry telling Jane Goodall in 2019 they want two children "maximum" for the sake of the planet.
