Lions place QB Matthew Stafford on COVID-19 reserve list

The Detroit Lions have placed Matthew Stafford on the COVID-19 reserve list.

This does not necessarily mean that Stafford has tested positive for COVID-19. Stafford has not publicly commented on the news. The list is designated for players who have either tested positive for COVID-19 or have been placed in quarantine after a potential exposure.

The news also does not necessarily impact Stafford’s availability for the upcoming season. Players have an option to opt out of the season because of the pandemic, and many have taken that option.

Players have 2 more days to opt out

Stafford has not opted out. Players have until Aug. 3 to decide to do so.

Health concerns at home for Stafford

Stafford has significant health concerns at home. His wife Kelly Stafford suffered with a non-cancerous brain tumor that required surgery in April of 2019. She dealt when an arduous recovery in the months after the operation.

Matthew and Kelly also have four children at home, including a newborn who arrived in June, 14 months after Kelly’s operation.

Chase Daniel and David Blough sit behind Stafford on the Lions depth chart. Daniel is a career backup who has started five games in his 10-season NFL career.

Blough was an undrafted rookie out of Purdue last season. He started five games after an injury to Stafford that the Lions all lost as he compiled four touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 54 percent of his pass attempts.
