After a decade of being left to rot, a house in Sydney’s inner west suburb of Lilyfield has hit the market – and buyers have been sent into a frenzy over it.

The crumbling house on 16A Carrington Street is completely unlivable, with the ceiling falling apart, grime-ridden carpet and dirt stains on the walls.

But within 48 hours of hitting the market, the house’s online listing racked up more than 4,000 page views and attracted more than 250 phone enquiries, according to realestate.com.au.

Elders Inner West real estate agent Sebastian Bonaccorso said he had never seen a campaign attract so much attention so quickly in his near-40 years of selling property.

“Untouched gems like this rarely come up for sale in areas as good as this,” he said.

Since the vendors live overseas, the deceased estate had taken eight years to finalise, he added.

The house itself sits on 297 square metres of land, and according to the listing has three bedrooms, three living rooms and a bathroom.

Interestingly, there is a second bathroom – that also appears to double up as a kitchen, according to the floorplan.

Despite the high volume of interest, mostly from builders or local families seeking a good location to build their dream home, Bonaccorso warned that future buyers of the house would need to give it a “full renovation and rebuild”.

“It is not as simple as polishing the floorboards and chucking a coat of paint on.”

The house will go to auction on 3:30pm AEDT Saturday, 13 February.

According to realestate.com.au’s Lilyfield suburb profile, the median house in the suburb sells for $1.8 million.
