Legendary Florida State coach Bobby Bowden tests positive for COVID-19

Legendary Florida State coach Bobby Bowden has tested positive for COVID-19.

Bowden, 90, confirmed the diagnosis on Monday morning to the Tallahassee Democrat. He told the paper that he feels “fine” and has not shown any symptoms of the virus.

“I don’t feel bad, yet,” Bowden told the Democrat. “I guess I can loaf around the rest of the week. I just have to keep an eye out for [symptoms].”

Bowden was recently hospitalized to treat a leg infection. He was released last weekend, only to test positive for COVID-19 a day later. Per the Democrat, Bowden is the only member of his household to test positive, though his wife, daughter and grandson are set to be retested later Monday.

Bowden was the head coach of the Seminoles for 34 seasons — from 1976-2009. Over that span, Bowden amassed a 304-97-4 record and won two national championships and 12 ACC titles. Before becoming FSU’s head coach, Bowden had a six-year run as head coach at West Virginia and four years at Howard College, now known as Samford. He previously had assistant coaching roles at both FSU and WVU.

Bowden, who turns 91 on Nov. 8, still lives in Tallahassee. His 377 career wins puts him second in FBS history behind Joe Paterno.

Florida State’s current head coach, Mike Norvell, also recently dealt with the virus. Norvell tested positive two weeks ago and missed FSU’s game against Miami. He returned to practice last week and coached the team’s win over Jacksonville State on Saturday. It was the first win for Norvell in Tallahassee.

FSU, now 1-2 with losses to Miami and Georgia Tech, will travel to play No. 5 Notre Dame on Saturday in South Bend, Indiana. Notre Dame hasn’t played since Sept. 19. The Irish’s Sept. 26 game at Wake Forest was postponed to Dec. 12 due to a COVID-19 outbreak on the Notre Dame team. The Irish had a previously scheduled bye over the weekend.
