Kyler Murray would love to play in NFL and MLB at the same time

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is focused on football right now, but admits he wouldn’t mind giving baseball a shot again. Murray, 22, says he would “love to” eventually play both sports at the same time, according to the Arizona Republic.

While that’s an accomplishment shared by only a couple select athletes — Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders — Murray also fits the bill. A year before Murray was drafted by the Cardinals, the Oakland Athletics selected Murray in the first round of the 2018 MLB draft with the ninth overall pick.

The team worked out an agreement that allowed Murray to play quarterback for one more season at Oklahoma. Murray turned in a fantastic year, and quickly emerged as the favorite to go No. 1 overall in the NFL draft. Murray chose football over baseball once he realized that was the case.

Despite that, Murray doesn’t want to close the door on Major League Baseball.

If Murray is serious, he’ll have to wait a couple years. Murray’s rookie contract with the Cardinals forbids him from playing baseball at the same time, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Unless the Cardinals are willing to restructure Murray’s rookie contract — which seems unlikely — Murray will have to wait until his next deal before he can give both sports a shot. The Athletics still hold Murray’s draft rights if he decides to return to baseball.

Though it might be a while off, Murray could be the first two-sport athlete in quite some time. Much of that depends on whether Murray can convince a team to let him do both, but if he performs like a No. 1 pick in the NFL, Murray will have some leeway to dictate his next contract.
