Yahoo Finance Tigers outfield helps Kyle Seager's 3rd home run of the night over fence
Three-home run games have become commonplace in MLB this year.
But we haven’t seen one quite like this.
Seattle Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager delivered the power surge on Tuesday, becoming the 11th player in team history to hit three home runs in a single game.
By the time he hit his third home run in the ninth inning, the 11-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers was well in hand. Seager finished the night hitting 3-for-5 with three home runs and six RBI, increasing his home run total on the season to 14.
But the unexpected display of power wasn’t the most remarkable part of his night. It was how he recorded that third home run.
Assist from the outfield
Seager launched a 96 mph Jose Cisnero fastball off the end of his bat that carried to deep left centerfield and appeared destined for a long out near the warning track.
Tigers center fielder Niko Goodrum had a bead on the ball and looked ready to make a play to keep Detroit’s deficit at 9-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
But left fielder Brandon Dixon also had eyes for the ball and sprinted toward the fence. He didn’t have eyes on Goodrum.
When Goodrum reached to make a play on the ball, Dixon collided with him. The ball bounced off Goodrum’s glove and over the fence, securing Seager’s spot in Mariners lore.
Shades of Jose Canseco
The miscue brings to mind one of the great bloopers in baseball history, courtesy of Jose Canseco.
While Seager’s defense-assisted home run doesn’t quite live up to Carlos Martinez bouncing one off of Canseco’s head, it did provide an excuse to have another laugh at Canseco, which is always welcome.
