Activist fighting for safer schools for LGBTQIA+ students
Age: 21
Hometown: Shaker Heights, Ohio

Oseremhen (Ose) Arheghan, a 21-year-old activist who began openly identifying as queer in the eighth grade, became motivated to make their school safer for LGBTQIA+ students after facing microaggressions from their peers at an early age. In high school, Ose began running their school’s cultural proficiency subcommittee, which was instrumental in changing the school’s discrimination policy. They also published a series of stories in the school newspaper centering on sexual and racial diversity. Ose was awarded the GLSEN Student Advocate of the Year in 2017 for their strong support of equal rights for LGBTQIA+ youth and other marginalized communities through journalism and civic engagement. Ose currently attends Ohio State University, where they have worked with groups like Advocates for Youth to champion sexual health education and support reproductive freedom for young people. They now use their platform to educate younger folks about LGBTQIA+ issues and inspire new student organizers. Most recently, Ose partnered with BrainPOP to film an educational video about Pride and how young people can use their voices to create change.
