What’s In My Kitchen? is an In The Know series that reveals chefs’ favorite kitchen tools. From blenders to knives to slow cookers, find out what they use so you can shop accordingly, and then step up your own cooking game.

Some food tastes good, some just looks good — but Adriana Urbina’s food does it all.

Urbina is a professional chef, culinary consultant and three-time winner of Food Network’s cooking competition Chopped. In fact, she is the first Latin-American woman chef to have won the Chopped Grand Championship.

Aside from that, you could get lost on her Instagram @adrianaurbinap. It’s riddled with colorful and carefully plated dishes like “mood-boosting sweet potato pappardelle and almond cilantro pesto” and corn pancakes topped with pickled red onions, jalapeños and avocado salsa.

Hailing from Caracas, Venezula, Urbina developed her culinary skills at Sumito Estévez’s Instituto Culinario Caracas in Venezuela and L’Ecole de Cuisine Alain Ducasse in France. She also served as an apprentice at Spain’s Michelin 3-star restaurant, Martín Berasategui.

In 2011, she moved to New York City where she launched Tepuy Dining, a pop-up and private dining company. She also worked as the executive chef at the former James Beard award-winning restaurant, De Maria.

Urbina shares her cooking and plating knowledge by offering virtual cooking classes. But, if you want to try cooking like her at home, check out this episode of What’s In My Kitchen? above and read about her most-used kitchen tools below.

ITK: Which kitchen tools do you use the most and would recommend having on hand?

Urbina: Definitely a high-quality blender. This is super important — I would recommend a Vitamix. It will last forever, and it’s the best.

A food processor is always good to have around. If you always want to chop large quantities of vegetables, a food processor will help you a lot.

A very good quality and sharp knife — I love Japanese knives.

And last but not least, I would recommend a good cutting board. I would suggest you buy a plastic or silicone cutting board. It will last longer, and it’s going to be easier to clean.

What is your go-to pan for cooking?

First, a cast iron pan. It’s great for searing and lasts forever, as well. And, a medium-sized nonstick pan.

What is one kitchen tool that can help someone make healthier meals?

I would say a slow cooker, air fryer and peeler or [vegetable] spiralizer.

What are some of the things of you use to meal prep?

I have a bunch of items, but two things I always use are a slow cooker and wide-mouth glass storage containers. Those two things are going to help you a lot to meal prep.

What are some of the foods and spices you always keep stocked?

Spanish extra virgin olive oil for sure — I always have a large bottle of that. Maldon salt — the regular one and the smoked one. Spanish smoked paprika, regular smoked paprika, cayenne pepper. I’m obsessed with vinegars. I have all types of vinegars, but I always use apple cider vinegar and rice vinegar. White miso paste, fish sauce, nuts and seeds (or both), and last but not least, nutritional yeast.
