Kai Cenat becomes first Black streamer to break 200,000 subscribers on Twitch

This week Kai Cenat became the third streamer to reach 200,000 subscribers on Twitch and the first Black streamer to do so.

Cenat’s popularity on the platform has blossomed since 2021, thanks to him being the founder of the group Any Means Possible (AMP). AMP is made up of six creators that share viewers by recording content together to raise awareness for each other’s channels.

The two other streamers to break the record are Ludwig and Ninja. Ludwig hit 283,000 subscribers during a subathon in 2021, while Ninja peaked at 269,000 subscribers in 2018. A subathon — the word is a combination of “subscriber” and “marathon” — is a popular channel marketing scheme that helps a streamer’s channel gain a bunch of subscribers during one long stream. Ludwig is credited with making the concept popular.

Cenat’s channel hit the major milestone on the 21st day of his 30-day subathon, which he will continue until March 4.

The 21-year-old’s success comes after he was banned from Twitch on Jan. 26. While there was no official explanation at the time for why Cenat was banned, viewers and fans suspected it was because he had eaten edibles and passed out while live.
